More than half of all fatal
fires strike at night when people are asleep.
Roughly two-thirds of home-fire deaths are a result of people inhaling
smoke and the toxic fumes it contains while they sleep.
These people didn’t even know what hit them.
Smoke Alarms are considered to be the most effective low-cost early
warning device available. Nationwide
research and real life experiences show that installing smoke alarms in the
home cuts your risk of dying in a home fire almost in half.
Smoke alarms will alert you quickly about a potentially deadly
situation giving you time to react. If
we can prevent this from happening by educating ourselves about smoke alarms
and about what to do if a smoke alarm is activated, we can try to prevent
this nightmare.
Place a alarm in every
bedroom of your home and one on every level as well. If you need to purchase more for your home they are easy to
find in hardware stores or large discount retailers. Following the manufacturer’s instructions will provide you
with the appropriate information so that your alarms are strategically
placed. If you have any questions
about where to install your smoke alarms, contact us at the Cunningham Fire
Protection District, we would be glad to help.
With millions of smoke
alarms already installed in homes across the nation, it is estimated that
roughly one-third of these alarms is not in proper working condition.
The major reason for this is maintenance.
Some smoke alarms rely on batteries as the primary power supply, while
others are hard-wired into the electrical system in your home and need a battery
as a back up if the electricity fails. What
type do you have in your home? If
you need help determining which type of smoke alarm you have, you may need to
contact the property manager for your complex, or the contractor who built your
house, or maybe even contact an electrician.
Learn about which type of smoke alarm you have, and how to properly
maintain them.
The smoke alarm needs to be
checked each month to make sure it works properly, and if batteries are used as
a primary power source or as a back up, they need to be changed every six
months. A good time to replace the
batteries is at the beginning and end of the Daylight Savings period. When
you change all the clocks in the house why not take a couple of minutes to
replace the batteries in all the smoke alarms.
